Why do you work? (And how you can help others answer that question)

"What do you do?" is a pretty common question, but how often do you hear it followed-up by "why do you do it?"

If you can't answer the second part quickly, truthfully and happily, you're not alone. In fact you're probably in the majority. Maybe you already can answer quickly, truthfully and happily. Whichever's the case, I'd love to hear from you.

You see, "why do you work?" seems like a simple question, but it's one that really kind of jarred me. And the more people I asked, the more I found couldn't answer. The most common response was a repeated "why?" and a furrowed brow.

So I got to thinking that there are loads of people who could give some great advice, and many more who'd love to hear it, so why don't we join forces? We hear so much about following your passions, finding work that you love, doing something meaningful and the like, but in today's social media-dominated world, it's sometimes difficult to sort the genuine from the fake.

What if we could help each other to truly find work we love?

That's why I'm inviting anybody who reads this blog, or who has stumbled across it just now, to share what you know - or what you want to know.

I certainly don't have all the answers. Despite liking most of the work I do, my answer to the question "why do you work?" would - to be brutally honest - "because I need the money."

I would love to be able to say "because it's making a difference", "because I want to", "because I love what I do" or "because it's what I've always wanted to do." And I'm guessing I'm not the only one, so how about we come together to create a kind of community that offers advice and encouragement?

You could share advice on general things like:

Work-life balance
Finding a job you love
Becoming self-employed
How to find your passion
Defining what you want

Or you could offer some advice more focused on your work, such as why you do it, what it means to you, or advice you'd give to people wanting to get into the same field.

If on the other hand you want some advice, feel free to get in touch with a question or whatever issue you're trying to deal with.

How can you get involved?

Whether you're interested in sharing some advice, or seeking some, you could either send an email to editor@storm-from-the-east.com, or leave a comment.

And please share this with anyone you think could help, or could benefit. The more people we get involved, the better it could be.
